Optimal Application Timing
- AmEx has a policy: If you currently hold or have previously held a specific AmEx credit card, you will not be eligible for the welcome bonus. To maximize rewards, apply for the welcome offer first, then consider upgrade offers, and possibly continue upgrading/downgrading.
- Since the welcome bonus is available only once in a lifetime, apply when the highest historical offer appears.
- AmEx does not typically concern itself with the number of hard pulls.
- Apply once you have a credit history of at least 6 months.
- You can only get approved for 2 AmEx credit cards within 90 days, though this rule does not apply to charge cards. Multiple cards approved on the same day will result in only one hard pull.
- You can hold a maximum of 5 AmEx credit cards, but this rule does not apply to charge cards.
Summary
The sign-up bonus is quite attractive, making this card worth considering. With no annual fee, it’s also a good candidate for downgrading, and there’s no disadvantage in holding onto it for a long time. Additionally, you may come across valuable upgrade offers periodically.
